Control Freaks ask "What's Up, Dude?"

As you can probably tell from the post title, this month's theme on the Tour de Freaks is anything masculine. There are seven of us on the tour, with Kelly's blog being the first stop. I'm next, and you can just click the links to take the whole tour!

I don't know about you, but I always struggle a bit with masculine cards. When I think "guy" cards, I always think of trees (and texture - lots and lots of texture), and we have THREE wonderful tree-related stamp sets that coordinate together beautifully (one is coming next month in the Holiday catalog), so I made three cards using them!

Up first is good old Lovely As A Tree. It's been a real workhorse for the past fifteen years for Stampin' Up! The texture is from a new Dynamic embossing folder called.... wait for it.... Corrugated! Coming soon to a Holiday catalog near you!

Heart's Delight Cards, Lovely As A Tree, Masculine Card, Stampin' Up!
STAMPS: Lovely As A Tree, Itty Bitty Greetings  CARDSTOCK: Whisper White, Soft Suede, Basic Black, Crumb Cake  INK: Soft Suede, Jet Black StazOn  ACCESSORIES: Braided Linen Trim, Corrugated and Subtle Dynamic TIEF

Up next is the awesome Rooted In Nature, which came out with the new annual catalog in June. The texture is from the Seaside embossing folder.

STAMPS: Rooted In Nature, Itty Bitty Greetings  CARDSTOCK: Whisper White, Soft Suede, Basic Black  INK: Soft Suede, Jet Black StazOn  ACCESSORIES: 5/8" Burlap Ribbon, Seaside TIEF, Subtle Dynamic TIEF

And last, but certainly not least, is my new favorite stamp set, Winter Woods. The texture is from the Woodland embossing folder, and I cheated a little with a retired wooden button from my extensive, curated hoard collection of embellishments.

Guy Birthday, Nailed It!

I've had this Nailed It bundle for a while now, and haven't played with it yet.....which happens waaaay too frequently in my craft room. So many stamps, so little time! I love them all, but sometimes one or two (or twelve) get pushed to the back while I'm fixated on a particular set.

Masculine cards have always been a challenge for me, because I'm just naturally drawn to feminine, floral, and shiny stuff. Well, at least this card nails the shiny stuff! (Heh heh, see what I did there?Sometimes I crack myself up.)

I used this week's Paper Craft Crew sketch challenge #238 as the starting point. Instead of twine and a bow at the top, the die-cut ruler was used. And I thought the die-cut saw made a good substitute for the banner.

Country Livin', Masculine in Monochrome

I got to spend the day stamping with my friend Sherry yesterday, and I made up my mind while I was at her house that this weekend I am going to doing some serious "weeding" in the Box o' Useful Bits! This is what it looks like.....

I know, not very pretty or organized, huh? Maybe I should decorate it with some retired DSP. As for organizing it, I haven't a clue. Group things by color? Group by texture? Group the die-cuts together? There are things that fall into multiple categories!

After digging around in it for a while (so many things I forgot were in there!), I pulled out the two embossed pieces and the stamped truck from Country Livin'. All I had to do was color the truck, add a couple of Soft Suede mats, some burlap ribbon, and stamp a greeting (from Oh So Succulent). Voila! Guy card DONE!

I think tomorrow I'm going to use that yellow hexagon-embossed "useful bit."

Measurements
 Truck image 2-1/4' x 3-5/8", mat 2-3/8" x 3-3/4"
 Sparkle embossed piece 1-5/8" x 3-1/4", mat 1-3/4" x 3-3/8"
 Seaside embossed piece 2-1/4" x 4-1/8"

Best. Guy. Ever.

Okay, I have to tell you the story behind this card that was made for my sweet husband. He's a kind of low-key, calm sort of fellow, and not very vocal about expressing his love for me; a fact that used to bother me when I was much younger. He'd say those three little words sometimes, but not nearly as often as I longed to hear them.

Fast forward a few decades, and I am older and, I hope, a bit wiser. I can see now all the ways that he has shown his love and appreciation for me through the years. And actions speak much louder than words. I have seen friends in relationships where their guy would say it, but then treat them like dirt. Actions, people!

So, one of the myriad of ways, big and small, that he has shown me he loves me is by building a new set of steps to our home. The last time my mom visited, she had difficulty getting up the steps, which were quite a bit steeper than the building code allows. Before she came for this visit, he researched and planned and built lovely wide, shallow steps so Mom can make it up on her own. And then painted them and added the non-slip stuff so they are safe. I love that man.

Best. Guy. Ever.

I used this awesome sketch from Freshly Made Sketches to "build" the card:

Thoughtful Branches - Limited Time!

Today starts the new Thoughtful Branches bundle that will only be available from August 2nd to the 31st! I was on the fence about getting it due to the short time frame that it will be current, but I broke down and went for it. It's such a beautiful, versatile set that I know I will use it long after it's not available anymore. You can get the stamp set and coordinating die separately, or bundle and save 10%.

It was a lot of fun putting this card together, and I kind of went all over the place with the techniques and what not. I was on a roll! Watercolor washed the background, and then thought, "I wonder how it would look if I embossed it?" So I grabbed the nearest folder, which happened to be Seaside. I love how it's reminiscent of wind blowing. We get that a lot around here, lol!

While I made this one a Thank You card, it would work just as well as a masculine birthday, thinking of you, or even a sympathy card.

Here's the "How To"
Watercolor Paper 3" x 4-1/4" and 3-1/2" x 4-3/4"
Mat: Soft Suede 3-5/8" x 4-7/8"
DSP: 4" x 5-1/4" (I used retired It's My Party; you can sub any Mint Macaron DSP)
Tree: Early Espresso 3-1/2" x 3-1/2"
Gold Foil Sheet 3" x 3"
Card base: Very Vanilla 5-1/2" x 8-1/2", scored and folded at 4-1/4"
  1. Adhere Mint Macaron DSP to card base and set aside.
  2. Cut Early Espresso tree using Beautiful Branches Thinlits die, and gold foil 2-5/8" circle using Layering Circles Framelits. Set aside.
  3. On smaller piece of watercolor paper make a wash background using Pool Party and Bermuda Bay ink. Let dry (or dry with Heat Tool), then emboss with Seaside folder.
  4. Adhere gold circle to left side (overlapping edge) of embossed piece and trim off excess. Adhere both to larger piece of watercolor paper.
  5. Wrap Mint Macaron ribbon around so bottom edge of ribbon is 3/4" from bottom of watercolor paper. Adhere ends to back. Center Gold ribbon on Mint Macaron and adhere ends to back.
  6. Apply Soft Suede mat to back of watercolor paper, then adhere all to card base.
  7. Attach tree with your choice of adhesive (I used the Fine-Tip Glue Pen on a few branches and 1/8" sticky tape on the trunk). Stamp greeting in Early Espresso ink.
Since I haven't posted anything for fourteen days, I'm going to make up for it by posting EVERY DAY for the next two weeks. The Holiday catalog starts next month, so I'll have tons of things to share!
